Robin Hood.. Meh..

May 25th 2010 02:35

Whatever accent Russell Crowe is putting on in Ridley Scott’s version of Robin Hood…. We still love him. Well I do.. And once again Cate Blachett captivates us with her intense charisma when she plays Marion – this film would be lost without her strong presence. In saying that let’s not forget Mark Strong.. always a pleasure to watch in whatever he does, and a great villan.

If you’re looking for the typical Robin Hood story.. robbing from the rich to give to the poor, this is NOT it. This is the prequel. It’s set in the 12th century BEFORE ‘the legend began.’ It is the story of how Robin Hood became the outlaw that we know him as and how he came to assemble his merry men.

Most people seem to be complaining about this film – it was too long, crap, had bungled story elements etc.. and while it was nothing special to me, it was still entertaining and I didn’t feel the length to be honest. It’s still a good story, although you feel like you’ve seen it a million times before through other films with very similar scenes (does Saving Private Ryan come to mind?) and I couldn’t adapt to King John’s character, I’d say he was the weakest matchup in the film.

Don't rush out to see the film... however, if you’re bored one day and it’s the only movie you haven’t seen, sure, give it a whirl but don’t expect to sit back in your seat with your mouth open in awe or anything. If you have a heart condition, it’s likely to jump more when you are walking up the cinema stairs to your seat. It’s easy watching and a nice little story with a great cast but nothing to write home about. I'm expecting very mixed reviews.

So, we're to assume from this version that the Robin of Sherwood was a man in his mid-to-late 40s then? And Maid Marian was an old maid?

I've seen a couple of clips from the movie and it didn't do much for me at all. I love most of what Ridley Scott does - Alien and Blade Runner are masterpieces - and I like Russell in a couple of movies, Gladiator and The Insider, but another Robin Hood movie to add to the plethora of flicks, some dreadful, some okay, that already tell one version or another ...

Bryn,

I reviewed this move myself and what was annoying about it was that it could have been about someone else. There was nothing to connect us to what we know and love about Robin Hood. I understand it's a prequel to the legend but it's still Robin Hood - there should have been something, at least, recognizable to the legend we know even if he wasn't fully developed into the "folk hero".

Cate Blanchett's Maid Marion was just all "wrong". Her performance was great but she was so, so...not Maid Marion.

This is a good review and I agree with it.

The original drafts of the screenplay sounded much more interesting, when it was called Nottingham, and dealt from the perspective of the Sheriff, with Robin more of a villain character. That was when Russell was going to play both the Sheriff and Robin.

I remember when it was going to be called "Nottingham" and Russell playing dual roles. I would have much preferred that version than this one.
