Kick Ass Kicked Ass

This movie is kick ass. It may seem like a light hearted comedy but don’t be fooled it’s actually filled with blood and guts as well. I’m usually a gore lover but I felt myself squirming and looking away, not wanting to see the violent results such as a guy being put in a human microwave, or another being crushed by a car compactor, their insides spraying onto glass. Some things you just don’t see coming but I loved it all! (I'm sick, I know). It’s cited criticism that it attracts kids, but is too violent for them to watch leading to presumptions that it promotes violence to teenagers... pfft (doesn't everything?! Chill out!).
The film is based around Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), a comic book geek and chronic masturbator who one day wonders why no one has ever tried to be a superhero before. His curiosity gets the better of him and Dave decides to dress up in a green and yellow superhero suit bought off the internet for 99 bucks and take on crime all on his own. The suit makes him look less like a superhero and more like an Australian winter Olympics athlete, but anyway, he soon becomes a comic book hero himself when one of his crime fighting escapades is captured on someones mobile phone and put on you tube and he becomes an internet sensation. He nicknames himself Kick Ass, sets up a ‘help website’ and so the story begins.
With no special abilities or martial arts experience Kick Ass literally gets his ass kicked again and again while trying to fight crime. Soon he finds himself in too deep when he discovers he’s not alone and two more masked hero’s, Big Daddy, dressed as batman (Nicholas Cage) and Hit Girl, a pint sized kid wearing a neon purple wig (Chloë Grace Moretz), are murdering members of a large crime syndicate in revenge of the past. He soon gets caught in a trap he can't back out of when his identity is mistaken for the professionals.
The film is based on Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.'s comic book series and lovers of the original may think it’s ‘Hollywooded up’ and be left disappointed, but for those who aren’t a hard core follower, you won't be disappointed. When I went, the cinema was in hysterics and it was a rollercoaster of laughter, shock and a slight touch of sadness.
Of course I’m expecting some backlash from critics about Hit Girl’s role in the film. As a child figure she is seen bashed to a pulp by a crime boss, shot by her dad and even says the c word, but you have to be light hearted, don’t take it all too seriously.
Aaron Johnson is superb and is sure to be the next big thing (and leave his soon to be wife, Sam Taylor-Wood alone!).
All in all if you're looking for a laugh and a bit of action go kick ass at the movies.
