Dumbledore Gay...What's the big deal?

October 23rd 2007 09:28
J.K. Rowling has just publicly outed Dumbledore...
Dumbledore
D is for Dumbledore

What do you think?
It does not in anyway change what I think of the books, I love them now and I always will. As for Dumbledore, well I guess that is no big surprise, but it definitely adds to his character and I think upon reading again I may even understand him better…well, maybe the bit about him and Grindlewand.

But if you REALLY think about it, Dumbledore being gay doesn’t change much.

So WHY is it that we only find out now?
Well there are a few schools of thought, but most of them generally point to the notion that J.K. Rowling didn’t want her book sales affected.

Personally I don’t see that this would have made a difference, but it would have created one more thing for the Christian right to protest about!

Another view, is that it would have diverted readers. An article from the Canadian Press states the following:

"J.K. Rowling is a smart enough woman that she knows if she'd waved the rainbow flag, it was just going to draw attention in a way that she didn't want; it would have taken away from the story and become a distraction. I think the way she's handled it is perfect."

So what do you think?
Talk shows in the UK seemed to think it was unnecessary, perhaps another grab at attention post the quiet after the climatic end of the book releases.

There are still 2 films to come. Will it make a difference to them.
Will wardrobe take a new license?

All I can say is that I would really love to read Rita Skeeter’s tell all book!

Hmmmm - I wonder that too. I do agree that it would have distracted from the book....well the PUBLICITY of the book - but for real HP fan (i.e. me) - it would have just been one more thing to talk about.

the fact that is comes to light now, when there's no movie release and no more books is a good bit of bonus publicity...and Xmas isn't too far - if you know what i mean.

It's a good talking point - especially those that love potter talk!

Honestly, I don't buy into the idea of revealing things like this after the book is released. It's such an unreliable way of continuing your story- hell, Homer wrote down The Illiad back in the day to make it more 'stable'. When you reveal this kind of stuff after the fact, I feel like it's the sort of thing that should have been in the book. To hell with publicity and all that, it's not like the book would have bombed if it had been stated or at least very strongly implied. And if she was worried about idiots calling for the book to be banned, well hell, that's already been happening for years.

It just seems to me like if you have to actually state something like this in an interview, and for many people it's coming out of nowhere, then you didn't do a good job of exploring it in your book.

I agree with you Jickie...why oh why would or SHOULD she care about what poeple think and - absolutely - there is no way in hell that it would have hurt bok sales...

I have doe a little more digging on this subject and one interview asked "why now? why not during the actual story or earlier.....?"
the answer was
"because no one directly asked before"

It's a good answer - a smart answer, but also a VERY safe answer.

DO you think it is the real answer? you can't really argue it can you?!

Well I guess because when she started the whole concept of the book she was initially thinking of a "children's book" just like how the 1st book was. Then it all evolved into something more complicated dark as the children first reading them grew older with it (plus adults love the book too).

I don't think it would've been a big deal whether she said this IN the book or after the question popped out a few months after the last book was released. It didn't change how Potter fans loved the book. I don't think she was just being safe. She's very smart and she has that sort of mystery in her. Maybe just like any writer's characters, Dumbledore is somebody close to her in real life... she knew all along he was gay but already an open book... no need to emphasize it.
