Robin Hood.. Meh..

May 25th 2010 02:35

Whatever accent Russell Crowe is putting on in Ridley Scott’s version of Robin Hood…. We still love him. Well I do.. And once again Cate Blachett captivates us with her intense charisma when she plays Marion – this film would be lost without her strong presence. In saying that let’s not forget Mark Strong.. always a pleasure to watch in whatever he does, and a great villan.

If you’re looking for the typical Robin Hood story.. robbing from the rich to give to the poor, this is NOT it. This is the prequel. It’s set in the 12th century BEFORE ‘the legend began.’ It is the story of how Robin Hood became the outlaw that we know him as and how he came to assemble his merry men.

Most people seem to be complaining about this film – it was too long, crap, had bungled story elements etc.. and while it was nothing special to me, it was still entertaining and I didn’t feel the length to be honest. It’s still a good story, although you feel like you’ve seen it a million times before through other films with very similar scenes (does Saving Private Ryan come to mind?) and I couldn’t adapt to King John’s character, I’d say he was the weakest matchup in the film.

Don't rush out to see the film... however, if you’re bored one day and it’s the only movie you haven’t seen, sure, give it a whirl but don’t expect to sit back in your seat with your mouth open in awe or anything. If you have a heart condition, it’s likely to jump more when you are walking up the cinema stairs to your seat. It’s easy watching and a nice little story with a great cast but nothing to write home about. I'm expecting very mixed reviews.

Kick Ass Kicked Ass

April 14th 2010 04:38

This movie is kick ass. It may seem like a light hearted comedy but don’t be fooled it’s actually filled with blood and guts as well. I’m usually a gore lover but I felt myself squirming and looking away, not wanting to see the violent results such as a guy being put in a human microwave, or another being crushed by a car compactor, their insides spraying onto glass. Some things you just don’t see coming but I loved it all! (I'm sick, I know). It’s cited criticism that it attracts kids, but is too violent for them to watch leading to presumptions that it promotes violence to teenagers... pfft (doesn't everything?! Chill out!).

The film is based around Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), a comic book geek and chronic masturbator who one day wonders why no one has ever tried to be a superhero before. His curiosity gets the better of him and Dave decides to dress up in a green and yellow superhero suit bought off the internet for 99 bucks and take on crime all on his own. The suit makes him look less like a superhero and more like an Australian winter Olympics athlete, but anyway, he soon becomes a comic book hero himself when one of his crime fighting escapades is captured on someones mobile phone and put on you tube and he becomes an internet sensation. He nicknames himself Kick Ass, sets up a ‘help website’ and so the story begins.

With no special abilities or martial arts experience Kick Ass literally gets his ass kicked again and again while trying to fight crime. Soon he finds himself in too deep when he discovers he’s not alone and two more masked hero’s, Big Daddy, dressed as batman (Nicholas Cage) and Hit Girl, a pint sized kid wearing a neon purple wig (Chloë Grace Moretz), are murdering members of a large crime syndicate in revenge of the past. He soon gets caught in a trap he can't back out of when his identity is mistaken for the professionals.

The film is based on Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.'s comic book series and lovers of the original may think it’s ‘Hollywooded up’ and be left disappointed, but for those who aren’t a hard core follower, you won't be disappointed. When I went, the cinema was in hysterics and it was a rollercoaster of laughter, shock and a slight touch of sadness.

Of course I’m expecting some backlash from critics about Hit Girl’s role in the film. As a child figure she is seen bashed to a pulp by a crime boss, shot by her dad and even says the c word, but you have to be light hearted, don’t take it all too seriously.

Aaron Johnson is superb and is sure to be the next big thing (and leave his soon to be wife, Sam Taylor-Wood alone!).

All in all if you're looking for a laugh and a bit of action go kick ass at the movies.

The Last Song

April 6th 2010 01:35

I'm kind of embarrassed I watched this film (I blame my high voiced housemate!).. haha anyway... If you’re looking for something light where you don’t have to move a brain muscle The Last Song is the movie for you. The acting is pretty bad in some places (except for Greg Kinnear, love him!), and I couldn’t help but stare at Miley Cyrus’ strange mouth positions and weird stance but the script is very moving. It’s based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks (A Walk to Remember, The Notebook) and you’re sure to hear a few sniffles towards the end of the film when the heart strings are pulled.

It’s a teenage love story about Ronnie Miller, a rebellious, troubled 17-year-old who is sent to a beach in Georgia to live with her dad. She meets a handsome (VERY handsome!!) young man played by Aussie actor Liam Hemsworth and they are drawn together by their love of nature. They are faced with the challenges and excitement of new love but it goes deeper than that when Ronnie discovers her dad, who she has been rebelling against for the past however many years after a messy divorce, has terminal cancer. Her new love and her dad's condition help her rediscover her love and talent for the piano... hence the name of the movie.

The ending was good but I felt asthough I would have enjoyed the film more if I was 17. It's a great teenage date movie. The script was written for Miley, to build her career and I don’t think it did her any favours.

Balibo 5

March 26th 2010 09:41

Sometimes, as an Australian, you think you’re invincible overseas. Sometimes as a journalist you forget that you’re not. Sometimes you become ignorant and desensitised to the realities and fragility of life. This is the case of the Balibo 5, a group of young, ambitious male journalists with the hunger to go above and beyond their role and risk their lives to get the story to the world. They lost their lives trying, but in doing so highlighted a significant event that had been overlooked and is still under investigation

There's Nothing Quite Like A Good Pho

I am still experiencing winter here in London…and I believe I will be doing so for quite some time.
So I guess it is no wonder that soups feature high on my I-want-to-eat-it-now list.

It’s easy to do and really easy to do badly.
So what is it that makes the perfect Sunday arvo lunch out of a simple dish?
Three things need to need to be present in the dish at the same time; freshness, crispiness and mushy peas, some lemon and tartare never goes astray either

London’s Best Dressed

Chelsea
Ahhh Chelsea, designer shopping with a village feel and just a hint of snootiness! I love it. It calls me out whenever I have an hour or so to spare and its shops have bewitched me, even the patisseries are begging my waistline to relax…and at the excuse of Christmas it has – another piece of pannetone anyone?
But it’s really the shopping I want to talk about and more importantly the evil yet delightful way it seduces your credit cards and your ability to spend spend spend. People have told me to satisfy my self with window shopping and I laughed, boy did I laugh. Then it hit me that I just may have to do just that

Enough already with the Rosie O'Donell Vs Donald Trump Crapola...honestly do we care, has anyone really taken side? Have you?

I must admit, it was fun to hear them slagging each other off, especially the part where Donald said she was a slob and unnattracive. OOOO Ow - that hit hard
