A Cure For Bad Breath
October 21st 2006 07:44
Bad breath worries me. A Lot. I am always concious of it when others have it and I am always cautious of my own.
The problem is, you don't know if your breath is bad because you can't smell it. I have heard of triying to breathe into your hands but that doesn't work either - you just look silly. Don't be freaked out here, but licking your hand is probably a better indicator of how your breath smells...and that's usually bad (and youlook even sillier.
So what do you do? If you like your spicy and garlicky foods like me, chances are you'll have bad breath, and today I do. I know because I have friends that are kind enough to tell me...and i mean that - if they weren't so honet I would be breathing my stench into the world...instead I am maintaining its wrath.
It does hurt to know that your breath is bad, but at least if you know you can take care of it...and trust me it's better to find out than to never know, I don't know if I'd tell a stranger, but I'd certainly tell a friend.
So here's what I do:
Regular brush/floss/mouthwash - that's given, but also...
I am such a freak when it comes to this, so I usually chew gum after a meal...but that is only a short term fix.
EATING PINEAPPLE is great, this is not only good for fighting bad breath but it stimulates your metabolism - so good for your diet.
A great idea is a pineapple and mint jiuce.
Chew herbs such as parsely, coriander, fennel, basil and even cinnamon bark.
I've also heard (though not tried) that eating plain/natural yoghurt over a period of time will help.
I also find that green tea helps, it generally makes my mouth feel clean and again is good for you for it's antioidant properties and also because it stimulates your metabolism.
My favourite natural remedy is the fresh pineapple option...as much as I love fresh herbs, I couldn't take to chewing parsely.
You can take breath fresheners too, but if it is a long term bad breath problem I believe you need to get to the heart of the matter...or rather - the gut!
Finding out what CAUSES your bad breath is essential, you may not realise it but your gut may not be able to deal with certain things like dairy and red meats (these are quite common). And although you may have historically been OK with all of these foods, your stomach will change over time. If you are unsure of what to do about this or are concerned, see a naturopath, or do harmless tests like cutting out dairy for a few weeks and so on and see how you feel physically - Oh and ask someone to take a whiff of your breath.
If you have any more to add please feel free. I don't know too much about bad breath long term...i.e. gum problems or gingivitis, but I do know that a lot has to do wth diet and lifestyle. Even negative emotion and anger can cause bad breath...true story! This is because when you are stressed your gut wll produce different juices and sometimes they can come out as bad breath.
