Cricket; Is it Really For you?
November 27th 2006 01:06
It could be and you just don't know it yet!
I have put up with cricket for years, I call it love and being supportive of my partner. That's me kind and sharing all over, but it wasn't easy let me tell you!
There was a lot of kicking and screaming on my part, I thouroughly believed that someone was trying to brainwash me into something they dubbed as; Australian, sport'man'like, relaxing and here's a whopper, both intelligent and strategic.
Oh well when I heard those last two words I laughed for a long time...it made my partner sad, but then something happened...I said "I challenge you..."
I cjallenged him to show my just how clever and strategic this game was. I promised to watch 2 hours worth of a game (THAT IS AN ETERNITY FOR ME TRUST ME).
In this 2 hours the following was to be acheived: Excitement or at least some increase in heart rate from me, interest and concern for the out come.
A tough call for something I swore a lifetime of indifference to but here goes...
All of the above was acheived.
Yes it's true...I was ashamed to admit it, but years later here i am telling you and everyone that in the day night game that I watched where Australia won by 1 run, I cared A LOT!.
There was nail biting, nervousness and a HUGE interest...
I asked questions like, who are these people, what are their names and what is so great about what they are doing now - how do they know where to be and what the fricken hell is a square leg?
I don't remember the answers to these questions, and I don't know how to read one of these:
...But I know this;
Cricket is OK by me, yes I have been to the games and I can't sit still or drink beer so that is not good for me, BUT it is a part of my life now because it is relaxing and I feel some good ol' patriotism in there (that's a tough thing these days).
Cricket is there to relax me when I drive and in the background when I need to work or concentrate...as you can see I am not a purist, but by crickey the roads are safer when that is on on my car.
Let me know if you give cricket a chance, and remember, it takes time.
